The Fisher Paykell Super Cup was the forerunner to the Netball Super League and tried out the format of England players in teams of equal standard. Its creation was the recommendation of a review of the competitive structure in 1996/1997.
May/June 2001 the Fisher and Paykel Super Cup took place played over 6 weekends, at a central venue with all six teams playing each other, then placing playoffs on the last week. It continued in this format for 4 years. The inaugural teams were:
London Petchey Tornadoes, Northern Flames, Birmingham University Blaze, Team Bath Force, Northern Thunder, London Hurricanes
