1953 County Champions Surrey v Olympic Athletes

Joan Mills

Denzil Batchelor  was a British journalist, writer, playwright and broadcaster, who wrote for “The Times”  and reported that three million women, from juniors onwards, played netball and there were ‘thousands’ of clubs all over Britain!  He stated that Netball was a well-thought-out, spectacular game!   How right he was.

He watched Surrey beat an international team of Olympic Athletes 22 goals to 7 and reported that Surrey were expecting to win the county championship to be held at St Helier, Jersey at Easter – and they did – again!
